Design of Reliable Electronic Products Dr. Michael H. Azarian Center for Advanced Life Cycle Engineering (CALCE) A. James Clark School of Engineering - University of Maryland ( USA ) and Prof. Flavio G. Canavero Dipartimento di Elettronica e Telecomunicazioni  Politecnico di TorinoFriday, May 25th, 2012 9 am - 5 pmCOREP Corso Trento 13, 10129 Torino, Italy

Organizations that design or specify electronic products must find a way to meet their performance and reliability objectives despite pressure to deliver quickly at a competitive price. Each product design faces new challenges: the need for further miniaturization; the use of higher speed signals; the introduction of new materials and device technologies; the globalization of the supply chain; and the exposure to harsher lifecycle environments associated with the penetration of electronics into a growing range of applications, many of which demand portability. What tools are available to ensure that a product will meet its reliability goals, and to achieve this efficiently and economically? Are there proven strategies for meeting these challenges?

CALCE and the Politecnico di Torino have teamed up to jointly offer this one day course on design for reliability of electronics. Lecture topics will include: Design for Reliability Methodology Physics of FailureAccelerated Testing and Qualification Root Cause Analysis EMI/EMC and Signal Integrity Impact on Reliability Real-Time Monitoring for Risk Reduction.

Who should attend?

This course is suitable for engineers involved in design, specification, testing, or purchase of electronic products; project managers; technical marketing personnel; educators; and students.

Dr. Michael H. Azarian is a research scientist and member of the graduate faculty at the Center for Advanced Life Cycle Engineering (CALCE) at the University of Maryland . He holds a Masters and Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University , and a Bachelors degree in Chemical Engineering from Princeton University . Prior to joining CALCE in 2004, he spent over 13 years in the data storage, advanced materials, and fiber optics industries. His research focuses on the analysis, detection, prediction, and prevention of failures in electronic products. He has advised many companies on reliability of electronic products, and is the author or co-author of numerous publications on solder joint failure, electrochemical migration, capacitor reliability, electronic packaging, and tribology. He is the holder of five U.S. patents for inventions in data storage and contamination control.

Flavio G. Canavero is a Professor of circuit theory and electromagnetic compatibility at the Electromagnetic Compatibility Group, Department of Electronics and Telecommunications, Politecnico di Torino. His research interests include the field of signal integrity and electromagnetic compatibility. He is the author or coauthor of more than 200 papers published in international journals and conference proceedings. He is an associate Editor for the Letters Section of the IEEE Transactions on Electromagnetic Compatibility. He is currently a Member of the Editorial Boards for several scientific journals and a Member of the Scientific Steering Committees of several International Conferences in the field of EMC and electrical performance of interconnects and packages. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and received several awards and distinctions for his technical activity.

The course fee is 400 per person. A 20% discount for CALCE consortium members applies (the cost for CALCE consortium members is 320). VAT applies to enrollments paid by professionals and companies.
