Dr. Diganta Das of CALCE, University of Maryland, will take part in a panel discussion at the IEEE International Symposium on Hardware Oriented Security and Trust (HOST-2012). The topic of this panel, moderated by Prof. Mohammad Tehranipoor of University of Connecticut, is Dangers of Counterfeit Electronic Components: Detection Challenges, Solutions and Policies. The panel discussion will be held on June 3, 2012. HOST-2012 is a conference co-located with IEEE Design Automation Conference at San Francisco.

Dr. Das will discuss and address the issues related to the lack of due diligence of part buyers relating to becoming victims of counterfeit parts. He will also discuss the follies of purchasing parts and then inspecting to detect counterfeits, as the time and cost for a good inspection tends to outweigh the benefits. He will also speak on the hurdles for any authentication tool becoming a mass-scale solution to counterfeit part prevention. In addition to avoiding counterfeit parts, he will emphasize the importance of good supply chain management for staving off the choice of inappropriate parts and supply chain disruptions, as well as the importance of managing obsolescence.

CALCE is a research leader in the area of counterfeit electronics prevention and avoidance.The CALCE team consults with major organizations on developing and implementing counterfeit part control plans. CALCE is also major participant in the standards development efforts in counterfeit electronic part detection.
